Celbridge is going through a phase of significant change, from being a village in the Dublin commuter belt to a true suburb. The village identity is changing and the boundaries between Celbridge and the neighbouring areas of Maynooth, Leixlip, Lucan and Adamstown are blurring as they grow into each other.

There is a rush to build housing. While services and amenities are promised, delivery dates are pushed further out. Strategic Housing Development (SHD) and Large-scale Residential Development (LRD) planning applications are being used to speed up the planning process but also to remove some of the local decision making and grounds for appeal. The density and scale of these new builds is unprecedented in the area.

The Kildare County Development Plan 2023 - 2029 comes into effect on 28th January 2023 and will determine Kildare County Councils development objectives for Celbridge. To accommodate the significant increase in population, new public services are promised. These include, a number of new roads, a new bridge to alleviate congestion on the Main Street, a new boardwalk on the existing bridge, numerous new schools, new bus routes and the electrification of the train line and extension of the DART to serve Hazelhatch and Celbridge Station.

The new bridge is symbolic in that it has been promised for 25 years but never delivered.
